世界矚目的(de)中國共產(chan)黨第十九次全國代表大(da)會(hui)開幕以來(lai)，習近(jin)平(ping)總書(shu)記報告中使用的(de)一些(xie)熱(re)(re)詞(ci)的(de)中譯英(ying)立即引起(qi)了廣大(da)英(ying)語(yu)學(xue)習者的(de)特別關(guan)(guan)注，因為(wei)這些(xie)詞(ci)語(yu)無(wu)論對普通的(de)外語(yu)學(xue)習者、使用者，還是(shi)對考(kao)研族(zu)、翻譯考(kao)證族(zu)來(lai)說是(shi)又(you)一極接地氣(qi)、非常實用的(de)學(xue)習資料。在眾多熱(re)(re)詞(ci)熱(re)(re)語(yu)中，“不忘初心(xin)”由(you)于與大(da)會(hui)主(zhu)題直接相關(guan)(guan)，尤其引人(ren)關(guan)(guan)注。在這里，我首(shou)先(xian)要說的(de)是(shi)：既然翻譯，那就會(hui)有多種可能(neng)的(de)翻譯選擇，那么為(wei)什么偏偏選此而非彼呢？

讓我們首(shou)先看看“不忘初(chu)心”在(zai)十(shi)九大(da)報(bao)告中出現的具體語境，大(da)會的主題(ti)是：

不忘(wang)初心，牢(lao)記使命，高舉(ju)中(zhong)國特色社(she)會(hui)(hui)主義(yi)偉(wei)(wei)大旗幟，決勝全(quan)面建成小康(kang)社(she)會(hui)(hui)，奪取新時代中(zhong)國特色社(she)會(hui)(hui)主義(yi)偉(wei)(wei)大勝利，為實現中(zhong)華(hua)民(min)族偉(wei)(wei)大復興(xing)的中(zhong)國夢(meng)不懈奮斗。

官方譯文如下：

Remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind, hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, strive for the great success of socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, and work tirelessly to realize the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.

在(zai)這(zhe)里，“不(bu)忘初心”翻(fan)譯(yi)(yi)為“remain true to our original aspiration”，感覺(jue)十分貼切(qie)。當然(ran)，僅從翻(fan)譯(yi)(yi)的(de)多種(zhong)可能性(xing)來看(kan)，這(zhe)并不(bu)是(shi)說(shuo)原文這(zhe)四個(ge)字無論何(he)時何(he)處都只有這(zhe)么一種(zhong)“標準譯(yi)(yi)法”。同樣的(de)原文在(zai)十九大前不(bu)同的(de)場(chang)合也曾(ceng)使用過，也曾(ceng)有過不(bu)同的(de)英文翻(fan)譯(yi)(yi)，比如2017年《政府工作報告》中也曾(ceng)有過類似的(de)表述：

……宣(xuan)示(shi)了我們不(bu)忘初心、繼(ji)續前(qian)進、戰勝一切困難的(de)堅(jian)(jian)強意志，彰顯了全國人民走好(hao)新(xin)的(de)長征路(lu)、不(bu)斷(duan)奪取新(xin)勝利的(de)堅(jian)(jian)定決心!

…demonstrating our unshakeable will to remain true to the founding mission of the Party, to keep pressing ahead, and to overcome all difficulties, and showing the firm determination of all Chinese people to keep up our stride on the new Long March and continue striving for new victories.

顯然，兩種譯(yi)文的(de)(de)差異(yi)在于(yu)對(dui)“初心(xin)”的(de)(de)處理，前(qian)者(zhe)譯(yi)為(wei)(wei)our original aspiration,后者(zhe)處理為(wei)(wei)the founding mission of the Party. 為(wei)(wei)什(shen)么(me)會有這種差異(yi)？原因(yin)其實很簡單：兩者(zhe)語境(jing)不同，前(qian)者(zhe)是(shi)黨的(de)(de)十九大(da)，“黨”在整個話語中已經成為(wei)(wei)默認(ren)的(de)(de)主題，所以“our original aspiration”中的(de)(de)“our”指(zhi)向(xiang)就非常(chang)清楚；而后者(zhe)不是(shi)黨的(de)(de)代表大(da)會報告(gao)(gao)，而是(shi)政(zheng)府工作報告(gao)(gao)，所以如(ru)果采(cai)取同樣的(de)(de)譯(yi)法就可(ke)能引起誤解。

這種情況說明了翻(fan)譯中第一個根本的一個原(yuan)則：必(bi)須考慮(lv)語(yu)境，譯文(wen)必(bi)須與語(yu)境切(qie)合。

說到(dao)語境，我(wo)們(men)還(huan)需要意(yi)識(shi)到(dao)語境有大(da)小高低之分，同(tong)(tong)時又與語體(ti)、文體(ti)密切關聯，不(bu)同(tong)(tong)的語境也可能(neng)會導致文體(ti)與風格(ge)上的差異。比如，對于19大(da)報(bao)告中(zhong)出現的“不(bu)忘初(chu)心”，也有外國專(zhuan)家提出了另一種更簡單直白的口語化(hua)翻(fan)譯參考：

Don’t forget why we started.

這樣的(de)(de)(de)(de)譯文(wen)在意思上(shang)沒有(you)問題(ti)(ti)，而且由(you)于是十(shi)分(fen)平白的(de)(de)(de)(de)口語(yu)化(hua)說(shuo)法(fa)，本(ben)來(lai)是很理(li)想的(de)(de)(de)(de)選擇(ze)(ze)。不(bu)(bu)過(guo)，我們必須(xu)考慮原文(wen)“不(bu)(bu)忘(wang)(wang)初(chu)心(xin)(xin)”是出(chu)(chu)現作為十(shi)九大會議主題(ti)(ti)的(de)(de)(de)(de)語(yu)境(jing)中(zhong)，使用十(shi)分(fen)口語(yu)化(hua)和(he)隨意的(de)(de)(de)(de)表(biao)達方式就未必恰當了。這就說(shuo)明，翻譯總是在一(yi)個(ge)特定的(de)(de)(de)(de)語(yu)境(jing)、一(yi)個(ge)主題(ti)(ti)系統下的(de)(de)(de)(de)一(yi)套話(hua)語(yu)中(zhong)進(jin)行的(de)(de)(de)(de)，詞語(yu)選擇(ze)(ze)會“牽一(yi)發而動全身”，而反(fan)過(guo)來(lai)說(shuo)就是總體上(shang)的(de)(de)(de)(de)語(yu)境(jing)、主題(ti)(ti)和(he)語(yu)體決定不(bu)(bu)同(tong)的(de)(de)(de)(de)選擇(ze)(ze)。如果不(bu)(bu)考慮這些前提，僅僅從“不(bu)(bu)忘(wang)(wang)初(chu)心(xin)(xin)”本(ben)身來(lai)考慮的(de)(de)(de)(de)話(hua)，應該(gai)說(shuo)don’t forget why we started這種譯法(fa)非常自然(ran)。再(zai)說(shuo)，自然(ran)的(de)(de)(de)(de)也會有(you)多(duo)(duo)種，可以(yi)成立的(de)(de)(de)(de)翻譯還會很多(duo)(duo)。實(shi)際上(shang)，在十(shi)九大報告中(zhong)，“不(bu)(bu)忘(wang)(wang)初(chu)心(xin)(xin)”在正文(wen)中(zhong)幾(ji)次(ci)出(chu)(chu)現，每(mei)次(ci)的(de)(de)(de)(de)英語(yu)譯文(wen)都有(you)所(suo)不(bu)(bu)同(tong)，比如：

不忘初心，方得始終。
Never forget why you started, and you can accomplish your mission.

無論是弱小還是強大，無論是順境還是逆境，我們黨都初心不改、矢志不渝……
…whether in times of weakness or strength, whether in times of adversity or smooth sailing,?our Party has never forgotten its founding mission, nor wavered in its pursuit.

在全黨開展“不忘初心、牢記使命”主題教育。
We will launch a campaign on the theme of “staying true to?our founding mission”.

對于一個掌握了英(ying)文(wen)(wen)，能(neng)夠比較自由地表(biao)達(da)思想的(de)人來(lai)說，表(biao)達(da)的(de)方式(shi)當(dang)然會多(duo)種多(duo)樣，我們(men)還(huan)可以隨意(yi)列出(chu)一些可以大致表(biao)達(da)同樣意(yi)義的(de)英(ying)文(wen)(wen)表(biao)達(da)方式(shi)：

Don’t forget why we started in the first place.

Let’s not forget what we aimed at from the beginning.

Forget not our Party’s founding mission.

We won’t forget what we aspired to from the outset.

(We’ll ) never let our Party’s founding mission escape from our mind.

不同的(de)譯文(wen)自然(ran)會有不同的(de)適應(ying)性(xing)，那(nei)么這也(ye)就是(shi)說，一個好的(de)譯者應(ying)該首先具備多種選(xuan)擇的(de)可能性(xing)，并且能夠根(gen)據翻譯的(de)具體(ti)場合、語(yu)境、主題、對象等條(tiao)件做出最適宜的(de)選(xuan)擇。

就remain true to our original aspiration這一處理方式而言(yan)，其(qi)中(zhong)的(de)(de)(de)remain與否(fou)定式的(de)(de)(de)直譯don’t相(xiang)比(bi)(bi)是(shi)一種正(zheng)(zheng)向表述的(de)(de)(de)角度(du)，在(zai)英文(wen)正(zheng)(zheng)式文(wen)體中(zhong)更(geng)(geng)常用；同時(shi)這一詞比(bi)(bi)有(you)些翻譯中(zhong)的(de)(de)(de)stay更(geng)(geng)正(zheng)(zheng)式、嚴肅(su)一些；remain true to 比(bi)(bi)don’t forget不(bu)(bu)僅更(geng)(geng)正(zheng)(zheng)式，而且意義上也(ye)比(bi)(bi)其(qi)它類似選擇更(geng)(geng)具(ju)恒定、永久、矢(shi)志不(bu)(bu)渝的(de)(de)(de)感覺；our一詞與黨的(de)(de)(de)會(hui)議的(de)(de)(de)主題更(geng)(geng)加密切關(guan)聯(lian)；original 比(bi)(bi)starting或(huo)first讓(rang)人感到不(bu)(bu)僅黨的(de)(de)(de)初衷不(bu)(bu)改，而且讓(rang)人同時(shi)聯(lian)想(xiang)到黨從(cong)一開始就是(shi)一個具(ju)有(you)原創思想(xiang)的(de)(de)(de)政黨；aspiration則讓(rang)人聯(lian)想(xiang)到“目標遠大(da)”，“任重道遠”（實現中(zhong)華(hua)民(min)族(zu)偉大(da)復興）的(de)(de)(de)意思。

綜上所述，remain true to our original aspiration在大(da)會主題的(de)語(yu)境(jing)中(zhong)是非常(chang)恰當的(de)翻(fan)譯。
